Release Requirements

What You Need To Release Your Vehicle

Georgia law sets the same standard for everyone: identification, a key, proof of your right to the vehicle, and payment. What counts as proof depends on who is picking up. Find your situation below and bring every item on the list.

For Every Release

Five Things Every Pickup Requires

These apply no matter who is picking up. Georgia DPS Rule 570-38-7-.18.

Valid Driver's License

From the person taking the vehicle.

Ignition Key

Or your own tow truck if the vehicle will not start.

Proof Of Ownership Or Authority

See the list for who is picking up.

Payment In Full

Settled before the vehicle leaves the lot.

Release Hours

Pickups outside posted hours carry an after-hours fee.

Who Is Picking Up

Bring These For Your Situation

Each card is the complete list for that person. Personal belongings are released to the registered owner; when anyone else takes the vehicle, we hold them for the owner.

Registered Owner

Your name is on the registration

  1. Driver's license
  2. Registration or title (just bought it? bill of sale plus temporary tag)
  3. Ignition key
  4. Payment in full

Co-owners: either person named on the registration may pick up alone. Everything inside the vehicle leaves with you.

Someone Picking Up For The Owner

Family, a friend, an employee, or a shop the owner sent

  1. Your driver's license
  2. A signed, dated letter from the owner naming you and listing the VIN, or a notarized power of attorney
  3. A copy or photo of the owner's ID
  4. The owner's registration or title
  5. Ignition key
  6. Payment in full

We call the owner to confirm before release. Personal belongings leave with you only if the letter says so.

Lienholder Or Repossession Agent

Bank, credit union, finance company, or its recovery agent

  1. Driver's license of the person picking up
  2. Authorization on the lienholder's letterhead: VIN, recovery company, signer's name, title, and direct phone
  3. Proof of the lien: title copy showing the lienholder, Georgia DOR lien record, or the finance contract
  4. Repossession assignment or work order
  5. Ignition key or your own wrecker
  6. Payment in full

We confirm with the lienholder at its published number. The lien does not reduce the charges. The owner's personal belongings stay with us for the owner.

Leased Or Rented Vehicle

Driver named on the lease or rental agreement

  1. Driver's license
  2. Current lease or rental agreement
  3. Ignition key
  4. Payment in full

Leasing or rental company picking up: a letter on company letterhead naming the person and the VIN, registration in the company name, that person's driver's license, and payment in full.

Insurance Company

Total-loss settlement; salvage transporter such as Copart, IAA, or a tow company

  1. Insurer's authorization: claim number, VIN, insured's name, and the transporter picking up
  2. Transporter's dispatch order showing the same VIN
  3. Transporter's driver's license
  4. Payment in full before pickup

The insured's name must match our registration record; otherwise we need the owner's written authorization. Personal belongings stay with us for the owner.

Law Enforcement

Holds, seizures, and stolen-vehicle recoveries

  1. Hold on the vehicle: the agency's written release before anyone can pick up
  2. Agency taking the vehicle: seizure order, warrant, or property receipt with the case number
  3. Officer's agency ID and badge number

A vehicle reported stolen stays on hold until the agency clears it in writing; the owner then picks up as the registered owner. We cannot release on a phone call.

Company-Owned Vehicle

Registered to a business or a dealer

  1. Letter on company letterhead, signed by an officer or manager, naming you and the VIN with a direct phone
  2. Registration or title in the company name (dealer: dealer license plus title or certificate of origin)
  3. Your driver's license
  4. Ignition key
  5. Payment in full

We may call the company's main number to confirm.

Owner Has Passed Away

Executor, administrator, or heir

  1. Death certificate
  2. Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration from probate court, or Georgia DOR Form T-20 Affidavit of Inheritance (notarized) if no estate was opened
  3. Your driver's license
  4. Registration or title
  5. Ignition key
  6. Payment in full

A surviving co-owner named on the registration picks up as the registered owner.

At The Scene

You arrive before the tow truck leaves the property

  1. Show the ignition key and move the vehicle immediately

Not hooked up yet: no charge. Hooked up but still on the property: drop fee per the posted sign (none on our current schedule). Once the truck has left the property, the full tow applies.

Buyer At A Court-Ordered Sale

Magistrate court lien sale

  1. Driver's license
  2. Court order and our bill of sale
  3. Sale price paid

No release before the sale closes.
